Product Review

Designed as a premium quality, wired headset for Xbox 360 gamers, the SteelSeries Spectrum 5xb has XL-sized, hearthrough cloth ear cushions that fit comfortably around the ear. With the custom-built soundscape via 40mm SunDancer (SCS) units, gamers can pinpoint the direction and locations of noises and movement throughout the game. The headset features a durable, double-braided nylon cord and dismantles into 3 separate parts. Its retractable, unidirectional microphone presents users with adjustable, convenient and clear voice communication for Xbox LIVE . The SteelSeries Spectrum AudioMixer connects the SteelSeries Spectrum 5xb to the Xbox 360 and provides new features intended to enhance the gamers audio experience. Easy access to independent audio and voice controls provides players with complete and intuitive control of volume levels for in-game audio and Xbox LIVE communication. SteelSeries LiveMix offers players the quick-button option to improve the balance of Xbox LIVE chat and in-game audio, so that voice communication is mixed and amplified over the sounds of gunfire and explosions, without having to increase the volume of the headset and risk hearing damage.

I bought this headset for the main reason of it having the "durable" nylon braided cord. I had gotten tired of the Microsoft headsets always shorting out. Well three months later the right ear cup is shorting out on my 5xb's. I'm never rough on my things and always baby my electronics so fingers point to cheap components. If I move the wire around a little it will come back on, but as soon as it's moved again it shorts out. SteelSeries won't do anything about it despite their claimed 1 year warranty because it was not purchased through their website. I would caution anyone considering this headset to look elsewhere, because there are far better options.

I love these 5xB headphones with one exception, when turned up even slightly people around me can hear almost clearly what I'm listening to, that is the entire point to wear them, to not disturb everyone else. They are extremely comfortable and perfect for gaming. They aren't the "bassiest" headphones I've ever owned, but still good nonetheless.

[UPDATE] There has been one instance where one of the earpieces stopped producing volume until I unplugged the headset and plugged it back in. The headset has also recently developed a permanent hum. It isn't noticeable when playing a game...yet.

[UPDATE 2] The right earpiece seems to be defective. Every game session it will produce random static and then short out until I unplug it for about 10 seconds and plug it back in. Sending them back to Newegg for a replacement. I'll keep this review updated. :)

I spent a few months looking for headphones to purchase to use for my PC and Xbox 360. I had originally settled on a different pair from SteelSeries until they notified me they were coming out with these, specifically designed for the Xbox 360. I waited and originally planned to purchase from Amazon but they ran out of stock so I just got them from Newegg.

The headphones come packaged in a nice box and is easy to take out and set up. There is a lot of...Read more
