Mediocre, in every sense of the word.,

Otomedius is a horizontally scrolling shooter which touts itself as the successor to Konami's classic Gradius series. While it shares many of the base gameplay features as this legendary series, it unfortunately suffers many problems which results in a very mediocre experience.
Just to name a few, due to the size of your player character on the screen, it can become extremely difficult to correctly gauge your hitbox, especially on the harder difficulties when the screen is full of projectiles.
While the 2-D artwork which permeates the game is well done, the actual 3D models used within the game itself are very lackluster. This becomes especially apparent during times when the game zooms in during cutscenes.
The multiplayer aspect of the game is also a disappointment. The game does not allow for two people to play together in the normal "Story" mode of the game. Rather, the only way to play with friends is in a specific "Multiplayer" mode, where the second...Read more

If you're a fan of Gradius, you're certainly aware of Parodius, Otomedius, and other shooters of the same ilk. Otomedius Excellent is the first time that the franchise has hit the western market. With titles like Deathsmiles, Raiden IV, Raiden Fighters Aces, and some others on store shelves, is it worth getting Otomedius Excellent? Yes, for the affordable price I have no problem easily recommending Otomedius Excellent to any shooter fans out there. Similar to Gradius, Deathsmiles, Trouble Witches Neo, etc., Otomedius Excellent takes place on a horizontal plane instead of a vertical plane. This is a shooter all about memorization. This isn't the kind of shooter that is as mindless as you may think. The pace is a lot slower and more methodical. To be honest, I still prefer a vertical plane in shooters with faster ships, but I've enjoyed Otomedius Excellent a lot. It's a completely different shooter than something like Deathsmiles. Otomedius doesn't spam the screen with beautiful pink...Read more

I'm not the most hardcore shoot-em-up fan--having only played a few Gradius games, Darius Twin, and the more recent Trouble Witches Neo! Truthfully, I bought this game on a whim, but I definitely didn't regret it.
If you're on the fence, grab it.
Pros:
-Variety of fun/cute characters who all have different play styles.
-Lots of weapons to find and choose from. (<3 Arnval with the S.Laser)
-Variable difficulty: Probably easier than most shoot-em-ups to begin with, but offers a near endless increase with the multiple laps in score mode.
-Good to Great music (depending on who you ask).
Cons:
-Limited Modes: It'd be nice to have some extra levels and/or a boss rush option.
-Co-op is limited and unforgiving (Online cuts off if host dies, no unlimited continues for beginners).
-Weak Story, which didn't matter to me given the genre, but some people take this VERY seriously apparently.
