While a cheap photo tripod could probably be bought for about $20, the key issue with the Kinect is the mount itself; it's a proprietary mount that uses clips rather than the universal mount found on virtually every camera and camcorder. What's nice about the stand is that the head piece that clips onto the Kinect mount is itself mounted to the main shaft of the stand by a universal tripod mount screw, meaning the head piece can itself be attached to any tripod head for those who want to mount a Kinect sensor to a quality tripod for max stability and greater height adjustment. Custom tripod mount plates for the Kinect cost $20 and require screwing threads into the bottom of the Kinect by comparison. So for those who want to use a tripod, the head piece alone is worth the $15 price.
